Designing inspiring learning spaces

For classroom design, I believe in students working in groups to have them work with their peers rather than rows, a cozy corner and having carpet time supports their learning.  I also believe in having a cozy corner and carpet time.

Cluster Seating Arrangement

In a cluster seating arrangement the students are arranged in groups of 3-6 facing each other. There are many benefits for the teachers and students for this arrangement. This arrangement encourages collaboration and discussion by allow students to easily talk, share ideas, and working together to problem solve. The arrangement allow increases engagement by having them in the groups to keep students involved and attentive, to also make them feel like a team. For the teacher this helps them move between groups and provide targeted support or instruction more efficiently, depending on the groups needs.  While in cluster seating the teacher can make easy changes based on the students ability, behavior, or even the activity. This allows accommodations and differentiation.

Cozy Corner

A cozy corner (also called a calm-down corner or safe space) is designated area in the classroom where students can go to relax, regulate their emotions, and become refocus to continue working. The benefits for the cozy corner in an elementary school setting is super beneficial for them. The cozy corner helps support emotional regulation, which can mean when a student is feeling overwhelmed or frustrated, they can come to the cozy corner to calm down. The cozy corner also promotes self-awareness and builds independence for the students. It helps them recognize their emotions and choosing certain strategies to manage them independently. This also helps them know how to self-regulate without always relying on the teacher.

Carpet time

A super important part of a students learning is getting close to the material and being close to your peers. Having the students on the carpet helps minimize distractions and keeps everyone focused on the teacher. Carpet time is perfect for read-aloud where students need to see and hear clearly. Students are more likely to participate while on the carpet in a close group setting. This placement supports differentiation by allowing movement and a change from desk seating to carpet.
